A lot of people have been asking about what to do to actually make the money when you’re living on a “shoe string budget”. Well, we heard the call and decided to jump into the steps one can take to fund their Dubstep.

Analyze your current situation

Do you live by yourself? Do you have a job? Do you live in your parent’s basement? You need to have a clear image of “where you are now” in life in order to be able to budget accordingly. If you live by yourself you’ll need to generate more money, cut down expenses and save.

Yet if you live and you don’t have to pay rent or any other expenses; the time to save up enough cash will be reduced considerably. So before you jump into any strategies analyze in detail your current situation. Things to analyze are:

  • Income (if any)
  • Expenses (if any)
  • Opportunities to make more money (even non DJ related)

Then tweak your lifestyle to “cut unnecessary expenses” and increase your income. Then create a list of “equipment needed” and prioritize them. Buy your gear one by one, not all at once.

Increase your income

The road to becoming a professional DJ requires sacrifice. This means not going to parties that are a waste of time and money, it also means to take on more jobs to increase your income. It could be anything from taking another job, or simply mowing your neighbors’ lawn. Money is everywhere; you just need to know where to find it.

Where to find money

If you can’t track down money in the physical world, you could always turn to the virtual. There are so many opportunities to make money online it isn’t even funny. All you need to do is to find what skill you have to offer that other people are willing to pay money for. For instance if you are a musician and have some gear to record, then you could make music for other people and sell it as a freelancer, or even simply clean up recordings and charge money. Another way is blogging, although there are a lot of aspects that one needs to learn in order to actually make a buck.

You could even check out the various Freelancing websites out there and do some extra work on your time off, whether it’s Photoshop, writing, music or even programming. All you need to do is find out what you’re good at and what other people might need.

Donations or Contests

If you present a well thought out plan about your dream, there are a lot of people willing to donate to your cause. We all have family and friends that are willing to lend a helping hand, so instead of them helping they could donate $10 dollars to your dream. Get enough donations and you’ve got yourself a brand new kit for DJing. You could also sell contest tickets to something like an iPad2 or a Flat Screen TV.

People are willing to pay $20 for a ticket when they know they could win something worth $700 USD. Use your brain, there are a lot of opportunities to cash on
